Looking for things to do in Colorado? We’ve got a few ideas!
The scenic route from Denver to Aspen is one of the most breathtaking drives in the U.S. The canyons, mountains, and Alpine meadows against the majestic backdrop of the Rocky Mountains is a road tripper’s dream—but did you know that it’s also integral to the making of whiskey production?
Stranahan’s American Single Malt would not be what it is if it weren’t for the pure Rocky Mountain Spring water and locally sourced grain. When you travel these roads, you’ll explore Colorado whiskey’s heart and soul and embrace the heritage behind our spirits. The mountains, the fresh air, and the spring water are integral to Stranahan’s and what makes us one of the best Colorado whiskey brands.
So, let’s get on the road! First order of business? Stop by at the Stranahan’s Whiskey Distillery in Denver and learn the history of Colorado whiskey. Enjoy a distillery tour, tasting, and check out Stranahan’s distillery exclusives—special edition bottles only available at the distillery—and bring some home to enjoy as you recap your adventures with your friends. Relax in the cocktail lounge, it is an excellent way to cap off your day. Consider staying overnight in one of Denver’s local inns so you can enjoy your visit to the fullest.
Next, lay in a course for Stranahan’s Whiskey Lodge in Aspen and get ready to enjoy all the (remarkably) high points along the way. Give yourself enough time to stop and enjoy the landmarks, go for a hike, and meander through some of the small towns you’ll pass along the way.
Doing this drive in the summer means you won’t likely encounter road closures. To be on the safe side, check COtrip.com to chart your way, as it has real-time road info that could be helpful.

Denver to Aspen: A Whiskey-Lover’s Adventure
There are a couple of routes you can take when traveling from Denver to Aspen. We suggest taking I70 to 91 through Leadville, picking up route 24, and grabbing the 82 through Twin Lakes. Here are some highlights of what you’ll see along the way.
Leadville
Leadville is a historic silver mining town at the headwaters of the Arkansas River. Stop in and check out the National Mining Hall of Fame Museum, stroll the main street, or go hiking on the Mineral Belt Trail through incredible woodlands and wildflower-carpeted meadows.
Leaving Leadville, you’ll be greeted by the highest peaks in the Rocky Mountain range—Mount Massive, Mount Elbert, and La Plata Peak. Experienced hikers might want to try the North Mount Elbert Trail, but at 14,439 feet in elevation, you’ll want to be well-acclimatized before you set off.
Twin Lakes
Find peace in this charming resort town, go paddleboarding or fishing on the pristine reservoir, take a hike or cycle on a mountain trail, or tour the old ghost town to get a taste of times gone by.
Independence Pass
Independence Pass rivals the Alps themselves for its scenery. Take it slow, take advantage of the many pullouts and vista points, and prepare to navigate hairpin mountain roads. This is not a road where you can afford to get distracted, be sure to stop at the top of the pass and go for a wander.
Ghost Town of Independence
On the way down into Aspen, stop at the Independence ghost town. Settled in 1879 and deserted by 1890, it was once a bustling gold mining town and is remarkably well-preserved.

Destination: Whiskey!
Once you’ve arrived in Aspen, head straight to Stranahan’s Whiskey Lodge to enjoy a well-earned reward.
Aspen is where Stranahan’s story began more than 20 years ago when Jess Graber and George Stranahan conceived what would become a Colorado legacy. Opening the Whiskey Lodge in Aspen, Jess says, “is a long-awaited return home.”
The Stranahan’s Whiskey Lodge offers alpine-inspired bites and rare pours to try, including the new Aspen exclusive Calvados Cask. The most awarded American Single Malt just got better surrounded by the majestic mountain views. Stay for a few days and enjoy everything that Aspen has to offer and don’t forget, you can order a bottle of Stranahan’s when you get home as a special reminder of your Colorado road trip.
